2019 Elections:I call on Nigerians to embrace politics of respect and dignity-LCCN Archbishop

As 2019 elections year is drawing closer and political activities are beheevely picking up in all parts of the country, the Archbishop of Lutheran church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN),Most Rev Musa Panti Filibus, PhD,

According to him the political atmosphere is Charged with politicking in view of 2019 general elections and the media in all angle filled with news of criss-crossing and defections from one political party to the other, alignment and realignment among politicians and political parties.He consider such activities as sign of a maturing liberal democracy.

“On the other hand, it is most disturbing to see the increasing level of bitterness and hate expressed in the speeches of many of our politicians, young and old. Many politicians find it palatable to use derogatory, disrespectful and undignified languages in their speeches against the other. This is not what Nigeria needs. It must be avoided. Political speeches should be anchored on ideologies that are aimed at conversing for votes based on realistic manifestoes.” He Warned

Panti who gave his pastorial admonistion on Suday, 9th September 2018 at the LCCN Cathedral Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State Said the negative political rhetoric we hear each day we listen to news either over the radio or on the television is not only lamentable but condemnable. We hear statements and comments that should not be used against a fellow citizen under the disguise of politics. This gives reason for worry about the future of this country and especially about the forthcoming general elections.

“The spate of hate language in the political space leaves us with little optimism that the elections will be peaceful. This is not the way to go.” He lamented

Musa who is also the President of Lutheran World Federation (LWF) continue to Said that:

“Unfortunately, even religious leaders and religious organizations seem to be joining the bandwagon of politicking with bitterness in solidarity with political parties and politicians of their choice. For us Christians, it is not acceptable to slander another person just because of political differences. The Apostle Paul writing in Ephesians 4:31 says; Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. We must not inflame hate and enmity at any level because of political differences.

“I am calling on all religious leaders, Christians and Muslims alike to rise and reject politics of hate, bitterness, undignified derogatory use of language or insult. Instead, let us preach that which promotes a just and peaceful society.

“Equally, I call on all politicians to abandon politics of bitterness and do-or-die. Instead, you should converse for votes in ways that unveil your principles that respect others and be willing to be magnanimous and honourable in victory or defeat knowing that politics has to do with ballots not bullets. No single innocent life is worth the ambition of anyone. We must know that it is not the interest of any right-thinking person or persons that our political activities are characterized by lack of peace. We should endeavour to allow and nurture our democracy to mature without spilling of innocent blood.

“While encouraging our youth to actively participate in our countries democratic processes, I call on you to refuse being co-opted by any politician to inflame violence either during or after the elections. Whatever that is happening now has consequences for the future, and that future is yours. You must therefore shape it differently by pursing peace and justice for all.

“Sisters and brothers, all hands must be on deck to safeguard our democracy by remaining patriotic and proactive in our citizenship responsibilities. Let us continue to pray and act rightly towards the general elections that the entire processes will be rooted in the principles of fairness, equity, equity, integrity, credibility and transparency. We should not belittle the power of our collective votes in determining who governs us at any level.
