One of the indigenes, Aniekan Okon, said before the arrival of policemen, some elders in Umoh Obot Road, by Nto Akpan Inyang Street community, where the incident happened, forced Mary to pack her mother’s parts into a bowl on her head and walk around the community.

He said the woman was apprehended by the indigenes of the community, who tied and bundled her into a waiting police van with a bowl of sliced human parts beside her.

Okon said that when the police came to arrest her, the suspect, who is also known as ‘Mummy’ told them to take her away as she does not care.

He said, “She said I don’t care. Elders of the community made sure she carried her dead mother’s body on her head which she butchered into pieces.”

Akwa Ibom Police and Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko MacDon, who confirmed the incident on Saturday, said the suspect was in police custody, adding that investigations were ongoing on the case.

According to MacDon, no right-minded individual will slaughter her own mother in such a gruesome manner, noting that the police will have to get medical personnel to certify her state of mind before she is charged.

He added, “That story is true. She butchered her mum. We are suspecting that she is not of sound mind, but we do not have any medical capacity to say so. Medical personnel will have to determine if she is of sound mind or not. If not, which right-minded thinking individual will kill her own mom by butchering her?

“As I speak, we have her in our custody. We have gathered the corpse of her mom and deposited it in the mortuary. By the time we ascertain her state of mind, we will charge her accordingly.
