Adamawa Gov signs Environmental Protection Agency Bill in to law, 2 Others

In line with his promises to deliver the state free from violence and ensuring peace and stability in Adamawa, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has signed three bills into law after approval by the state House of Assembly.

They are Adamawa State Environmental Protection Agency (ADSEPA) Law, Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law and Adamawa State Limitation of Actions Law

The Attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Barrister Afraimu Jingi while briefing newsmen in Yola said the ADSEPA law is aimed at protecting the environment which is facing degredation from all fronts.

He added that the law is divided into five parts, with thirty seven sections which contains interpretation, composition and functions, finances, miscellaneous provisions, offences and power of the agency.

Barrister Jingi however revealed that the VAPP law will prohibit all forms of violence against persons and to provide maximum protection, remedies for victims and stiffer punishment for offenders.

He said the VAPP bill which was assented to by the Governor on thirtieth of August has forty seven sections which include provisions for compensation of victims.

Others according to the Justice Commissioner are appointment of protection officers at the local sexual offender database/register as well as registration and access to service providers.

He enumerated kidnapping, rape, abandonment of children, spouse and other dependants without sustenance, forced isolation and separation from family and friends and harmful widowhood among others as the most common forms of violence.

The Commissioner therefore called on all persons to utilize the VAPP law by monitoring and prompt reporting of all cases of violence against all persons to the appropriate authorities.

On the Limitations Actions Law, the Attorney General said it is to ensure that all claims are diligently and promptly presented and potential plaintiffs pursue them with diligence to guarantee finality in litigation.

He added that as important as limitation law is to the state, there has never been a comprehensive limitation law in Adamawa state, except few limitation provisions scattered in various laws.
