National Assembly’s leaking roof endangers lawmakers’ lives, says Elumelu
Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Ndudi Elumelu, on Wednesday, cried out over the safety of members due to the leakage of water into the legislative chamber whenever it rains.

Elemuelu, who raised the alarm while raising a point of order under privilege during plenary, noted that it was dangerous to continue to sit in the chamber under such a condition.

The lawmaker, representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of Anambra State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, pleaded that something urgent be done to rectify such an ugly situation.

Elumelu said, “I come under privilege on what is happening in this chamber. Mr Speaker, if you look around, we are surrounded by water, especially because our chamber is leaking and I am worried that if something is not done to address it, nobody holds one’s life but we never can tell what can happen.

“Coming into this place (Chamber), you can see the cleaners, they are busy packing the water that is coming down from this chamber and to me it is dangerous for our continuous participation in our day to day representing our people, speaking for our people for good legislation. I think, Mr Speaker, that something needs to be done to address these leakage within this chamber. This is my submission.”

Responding, the Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, who presided over the plenary, said that it was an important point and that it was noted.

The roof over many parts of the National Assembly complex leaks whenever it rains and nothing concrete has been done to address the anomaly.
