…says ‘zoning not in APC constitution’
Former Abia State governor and Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Uzo Kalu, has said that the transfer of power to the South in 2023 is not automatic.
Kalu, who spoke against the backdrop of agitations by the South to produce Nigeria’s next president in 2023, warned that the ruling All Progressives Congress has no provision for zoning in its constitution, contrary to the erroneous belief that the South has based its demand.
He spoke in Minna on Monday when he visited a former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, at his Hilltop mansion, saying he was in Minna on a private visit to welcome Abubakar from his recent medical trip abroad.
Kalu stressed that it was erroneous to believe that after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure, power would automatically be handed over to the South.
He stated that going by the APC constitution, the office of the nation’s president could be contested for by Nigerians from any part of the country.
“Most people are not aware that there is no zoning of the position of the President in the constitution of the APC; Nigerians from every part can contest for the office of President,” Kalu said.
The Senate chief whip also blamed the insecurity in parts of the country on saboteurs, who he accused of frustrating all efforts being made by the government to stop the carnage.
He expressed confidence in the ability of the nation’s much-maligned military Generals to bring the current security challenges under control.
