The lawmakers, made up of 14 Senators and six members of the House of Representatives, are stepping aside for various reasons. Several are now contesting for governorship positions in their states, while others are pursuing different political ambitions or have chosen to exit the legislature.

Prominent among those not returning include Senators Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Ogun West), who is eyeing the Ogun governorship ticket, Saliu Mustapha (Kwara Central), Lola Ashiru (Kwara South), Abdul Ahmed Ningi (Bauchi Central), Shehu Buba Umar (Bauchi South), Sarafadeen Alli (Oyo South), and Kaka Shehu Lawan (Borno Central). In the House of Representatives, notable figures such as Minority Leader Hon. Kingsley Chinda (Rivers) and Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki (Sokoto) are also not seeking re-election.

While some lawmakers cited the need to allow younger politicians to participate, others are simply moving to contest higher offices. Political analysts warn that the departure of such a significant number of experienced legislators could impact the institutional strength of the National Assembly, especially in critical committees that require continuity and expertise.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, with political parties expected to conclude their primaries by May 30, 2026.
