A 21-year-old woman, Mary Bitrus, who had lived in total blindness for several years, has regained her sight in one eye following a successful surgical procedure at the Specialist Hospital, Yola.
The life-changing operation was performed by Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr. Dahiru Ribadu, restoring vision to one of Mary’s eyes and bringing immense joy to her family and the medical team.
Confirming the development to journalists on Thursday, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Dauda Wadinga, explained that Mary was identified as completely blind during a free medical outreach programme organised by Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District.
“During the screening exercise sponsored by Senator Abbas, our team discovered Mary’s condition. Further examination revealed that her blindness was treatable through surgery,” Dr. Wadinga said.
He noted that the procedure was successfully carried out on one eye, with the patient now able to see clearly. A follow-up surgery on the second eye is scheduled in two weeks to complete the restoration of her full vision.
Dr. Wadinga emphasized the importance of early detection and regular medical check-ups, stating that many people continue to suffer from preventable or treatable eye conditions and other ailments simply because they are not diagnosed in time.
“The case of Mary Bitrus is a powerful reminder of what is possible when people have access to quality healthcare and timely intervention,” he added.
The Medical Director commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his consistent investment in healthcare infrastructure, modern equipment, and skilled manpower, which he said has enabled the Specialist Hospital to successfully manage increasingly complex medical cases.
He also praised Senator Aminu Iya Abbas for sponsoring the outreach programme that brought Mary and several other patients in need of specialized care to the hospital.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mary’s cousin, Jelvan Mary, recounted how the young woman lost her sight while in Primary Six, a tragedy that forced her to drop out of school.
“We are overwhelmed with gratitude to God, to Governor Fintiri, to Senator Abbas, and to the wonderful doctors and staff who made this miracle possible,” Jelvan said.
Mary Bitrus herself expressed deep appreciation to the medical team and all those who supported her treatment.
“I thank the doctors from the bottom of my heart. They have given me a new life. I am hopeful now and looking forward to going back to school to continue my education,” she said with visible emotion.
The successful surgery has been hailed locally as a testament to the impact of sustained government investment in healthcare and the value of targeted medical outreaches in reaching vulnerable communities.
Mary’s story is already inspiring hope among many others living with treatable visual impairments in Adamawa State and beyond.
