A called has been made by Rt Honourable Yusuf Yakubu Babu, Member Federal House of Reps from Adamawa representing Gombi/Hong constituency, in the national for Nigerians to become global Ambassadors for the country through new inspirations.
Buba, Chairman committee on foreign affairs of the house of representative in a press statement said Nigerian in indeed is a blessed nation with people having good parental upbringing.
He said this to draw the attention of Nigerians to learn the good lessons Mr.Steve Ikenna Nweke, who is a Doctoral Degree student in a Japanese University has put in the archives of many countries has aroused new interests in our country across the globe and attracted attention, reaction and commendation from our nation’s highest seat of governance, the Presidency.
Buba in a statement reiterated that the viral video shown Mr Nweke stumbled on what could be considered a fortune by many when he picked a wallet containing a lot of money, credit cards and personal materials at a Japanese eatery.
“As against what might be expected of anyone, especially those from the so-called third-world countries of the globe, Mr Nweke had conscientiously returned the money and all that had come with it to a positively surprised Police team and had, to even greater surprise, additionally, refused any reward for his act of selflessness, which, ordinarily, would have made him lawfully richer by 10 Percent of the total money he had returned!
“To be sure that he knew what he was doing, the Police had asked Mr Nweke what had informed his act of nobility and selflessness. The response of the young Nigerian scholar remains a lesson that is instructive to all Nigerians in our agenda and marches towards the Nigeria of our dreams; a Nigeria that is admired and respected across the world and one whose citizens move across the great airports of Europe and the Americas freely without being subjected to the cumbersome body search and interrogations that we are daily tortured within those airports.
“Mr Nweke had informed the Police in Japan that most Nigerians have good upbringing; we love God and abhor evil, and that the misdemeanours of a few Nigerians are isolated cases that cannot define who we, a country of over 200 million people, truly are. By his action, he told his, obviously, a bewildered audience that the false generalisation of thinking that all Nigerians are corrupt to the extent that they could do anything to lay hands on money was a fallacy that cannot be further from the truth.
“The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives commends the action of Mr Steve Ikenna Nweke for truly demonstrating the true Nigerian spirit of nobility, honour, selflessness and empathy for those in pain. These are qualities that other parts of the world hardly know Nigerians possess in good supply.
“As a nation, there is no gainsaying the fact that our citizens have, unfortunately, continued to suffer some of the most serious cases of hate, global disdain and opprobrium on account of the actions and mix actions of a few bad eggs among us. It is, therefore, a welcome relief that, following the mantra of the present Administration on corruption and attitudinal change, some of our nationals, especially, in foreign lands are beginning to buy into the vision of a corruption-free Nigeria.
“While Mr Ikenna’ s case may not be an isolated case of a noble deed by a Nigerian in the Diaspora in recent times, our Committee has continued to identify those who are daily springing up across the world as Global Ambassadors for our nation. We call on all Nigerians everywhere in the world to emulate this set of people by striving to align themselves with this new wave of social re-engineering among our citizens. In line with our new vision for global image-renewal and self- redemption, we must also make conscious efforts to sustain same in order to change the sad narrative of criminality and desperation for getting- rich- quick results by which we are mostly and wrongly defined across the world.
“We must, as a matter of constant efforts and re-enforcement, continue to let the world know that Nigeria possesses some of the best professionals in Medicine, Science and Technology, Academics and the Arts. A few weeks ago, a young Nigerian graduate from the oldest Medical College in Russia not only became the Best Graduating Student for the year 2020 but broke a record of many decades by achieving a full GPA of 5.0. In almost the same week, we saw another young Nigerian woman who achieved an, equally, outstanding academic feat in the UK. Only two days ago, Nigerian- born Prof. Charles Egbu became the first black Professor to head a University in the United Kingdom when he was named Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University, London. The list is, in fact, inexhaustible
“To motivate and inspire other Nigerians across the world to do their best and be their best, we urge the Presidency to go beyond mere commendation of such noble acts as demonstrated by Mr Ikenna to offering a recommendation for National Honours and Recognitions for all those that are making our nation proud across the world. These great Nigerians are, by their very actions and exemplary courage and convictions, fast rewriting the ugly script that some Nigerians, by their inelegant dispositions of the past, wrote for our country.” He said
