As part of the activities to mark the 70th Anniversary of the National Association of Seadogs, popularly known as Pyrates Confraternity, and in the spirit of the “Weekend of Service to Humanity”, members of the Association on the Katamaran Deck (Ijebu-Ode/Remo branch), Ogun State, took it upon themselves to clear the drainage and gutters in some parts of the town to check the threat posed by flooding in the area.
The members deck cleared around the drainages and gutters around the Idobi Market/Luba Road last Saturday and Sunday.
According to the Association, the gesture was intended to improve the state of health and the well-being of the people in the community by taking measures to combat flooding.
Capoon of Katamaran Deck comprising Ijebu and Remo lands with secretariat in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Mr Olumide Fagbohunka, added that the gesture was part of the of the various social services and humanitarian activities usually carried out by members of the association in their immediate environment and across the world.
He said, “Today, Saturday, 10th December 2022, marks the official commencement of the “Weekend of Service to Humanity” as part of the events commemorating the 70th anniversary of our dear association, the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity). We were founded in 1952 by Wole Soyinka, Ralph Opara, Nathaniel Oyelola, Pius Oleghe, Olumuyiwa Awe, Ikpehare Aig-Imoukhuede and Sylvanus Egbuche.
“The theme of this event is appropriately tagged “Weekend of Service to Humanity ”, which resonates with the theme of our platinum jubilee, “70 Years of Service to Humanity”. It mirrors the Pyrate’s fidelity to the second rudder blade – All before Self, which places people at the centre of our activities for Humanistic Ideals.
“Since 1952, we have contributed to national development through various advocacy and humanitarian projects within our community and across the Globe. Many people are beneficiaries of our o NAS Medical Missions which we have carried out in Ijebu and Remo axis.
“Equally, we have raised funds to support many humanitarian projects like the Eruobodo home for children with disabilities, poverty alleviation, education support for children, palliative supports during Covid 19 pandemic, support to flood victims, support to the Police, OurVotesCount, amongst many more.
“We embark worldwide on various causes focusing on specific UN Sustainable Development Goals. We aim to rededicate ourselves to increased significant achievements by answering in sincerity and action the founding humanistic question: “What can you do to raise our community to the highest level of fulfilment?”
“There is a lot yet to be done for humanity. As Pyrates, we remain conscious of this vital obligation. The “Weekend of Service to Humanity” provides an avenue to demonstrate who we are.”
Commending the members of the Pyrates Confraternity Katamaran Deck, Chairman of the Tricycle Association in the area, Comrade Gbenga Odusami, noted that the Seadogs had delivered on what the government had refused to do for the residents of the area within just one weekend.
