Senator Muhammad Umar Jibrilla Bindow, former Governor of Adamawa State, has expressed profound grief over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a towering figure of integrity, a mentor, and a fatherly guide whose legacy will endure for generations. Buhari, aged 82, passed away on Sunday in a London clinic after a prolonged illness, with his remains arriving in Nigeria today for burial in Daura, Katsina State.

In a heartfelt statement released in Yola on Saturday, July 13, 2025, Bindow conveyed his deep sorrow, stating, “I received with profound sadness the news of the demise of His Excellency, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon. The pain of this loss is deeply personal for me. The late former President was more than a leader; he was a father, a guardian, and a mentor in every sense of the word.”

Reflecting on Buhari’s influence, Bindow highlighted how the former president’s principles shaped his own political career. Serving as a Senator from 2011 to 2015 and as Governor of Adamawa State from 2015 to 2019, Bindow credited Buhari’s human-development-oriented ideologies for guiding his approach to governance.

He further praised Buhari’s unwavering commitment to accountability and national unity, noting that these values left a lasting imprint on him and many others who worked under Buhari’s influence.

Bindow described Buhari as “a leader of rare conviction and purpose,” whose remarkable journey—from a young military officer to military Head of State (1983–1985) and later a democratically elected President (2015–2023)—served as an inspiration to millions. “Muhammadu Buhari distinguished himself through courage, humility, and an unshakable commitment to national service,” Bindow remarked.

“Nigeria has lost a true patriot—a man whose life was marked by selflessness, discipline, and a deep love for his country.” The former governor emphasized that Buhari’s legacy would remain a beacon of principled leadership. “His legacy will endure as a testament to the nobility of public service—defined by honesty, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the public good,” he said.

Buhari’s tenure as president was marked by efforts to combat corruption, strengthen national security, and promote economic reforms, though his administration also faced challenges, including economic downturns and criticism over handling insecurity in parts of the country.

Bindow extended his condolences to Buhari’s family, the Daura Emirate, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, urging unity in mourning the loss of a national icon. “On behalf of myself, my family, and the people of Adamawa State, I extend our deepest condolences to his beloved family, the Daura Emirate, the government and people of Katsina State, and indeed all Nigerians at this moment of national mourning,” he said.

In a prayerful tribute, Bindow added, “We pray that Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgives his shortcomings, rewards his sacrifices for Nigeria, and grants him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.” The remains of former President Buhari arrived in Nigeria today, July 14, 2025, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

President Bola Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period, with flags to fly at half-mast across the country. Buhari will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites, as the nation reflects on the life and contributions of a leader whose impact will resonate for years to come.
