Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has unveiled plans to bolster security in Abuja, focusing on commercial transportation. Speaking at the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Programme on Thursday, Wike emphasized the need to profile all commercial buses operating in the nation’s capital.
Effective January 2025, all commercial buses will require security clearance from the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services (DSS) to operate in Abuja. This initiative aims to curb kidnapping and “one-chance” robbery cases.

Wike handed over new cars to beneficiaries to use as taxis, encouraging them to take pride in their profession. “They are not paying a dime. The government is supporting them to feed their families and reduce transportation costs in the city,” he said.
The minister stressed that profiling will enhance passenger safety. “Most Keke Napep and motorcycle operators serve as informants. Beneficiaries will be profiled by security agencies.”
Abuja should compete with other major cities worldwide
He explained that the profiling process will involve collecting vehicle numbers, driver names and other relevant information to ensure confidence in the transportation system.
Wike reassured residents that these measures will increase confidence in Abuja’s transportation system, aligning it with global standards. “Abuja should compete with other major cities worldwide.”
