Human rights activist Dele Farotimi was arraigned this morning at the Ado Ekiti Division of the Federal High Court on cyberstalking charges. He was admitted to bail on stringent conditions, including a 50 million naira bond and a surety who must be a resident of Ekiti State.
The surety is required to provide evidence of three years’ tax clearance, own a built-up property within Ekiti, and deposit the title deed with the registrar of the court. Additionally, both the surety and Farotimi must submit four recent passport photographs and four pictures while standing. Farotimi is also required to deposit his international passport with the registrar of the court.
Farotimi’s arrest on Tuesday in Lagos by operatives of the Ekiti State police command sparked widespread controversy. He was brought before the Ekiti State Magistrate Court on charges of defamation, which was later amended to cybercrime charges.
