In a controversial ruling that has sparked widespread debate over freedom of expression, an 18-year-old social media activist, Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff, was sentenced to 12 strokes of the cane, or two years in prison, or a fine of Fifty Thousand Naira (₦50,000) by the Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The verdict was delivered by Chief Magistrate Faruk Umar on Thursday, following Hamdiyya’s arrest on November 13, 2024.
