Adamawa Govt Vows Swift Action to Curb Flood Devastation as Yola’s Modire Community Reels

The Adamawa State Government, led by Governor Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has pledged urgent measures to mitigate recurring flood disasters ravaging communities across the state, with the Modire area of Yola South Local Government bearing the brunt of recent flooding.

The commitment follows a firsthand assessment of the crisis-hit Modire community by the Commissioner of Environment, Mallam Mohammed Sadiq Mohammed, on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Fintiri, Commissioner Sadiq revealed that the decision to act swiftly was made during the state’s executive meeting, where the governor directed all 21 local government chairmen to ensure waterways are cleared and channeled to appropriate canals.

The flooding in Modire, attributed to indiscriminate waste dumping and unauthorized waste depots by residents, has underscored the need for immediate intervention.

“We are here on the instruction of my principal to assess the level of damage,” Sadiq stated during the visit, accompanied by ministry staff.

“I will report the extent of the devastation to Governor Fintiri, who is proactive and committed to his Urban Renewal Mandate. He will likely visit the area soon to ensure action is taken.”

Sadiq emphasized the state’s adherence to warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which predicted severe flooding during the 2025 rainy season, with Adamawa among the most vulnerable states. He urged residents to refrain from dumping refuse in waterways and farming in areas designated for water passage, stressing shared responsibility.

“Government cannot do everything alone,” he said. “Community leaders must guide residents to protect their areas.”

Mallam Aliyu Idris, a community leader whose home was ravaged by the floods, expressed gratitude for the government’s prompt response. “The governor’s concern is timely, and we trust he will help us,” Idris said, pleading for urgent intervention to alleviate the suffering in Modire.
