Adamawa IDPs get relief as UNHCR, CERF built 454 Houses and commissioned by Gov Fintiri

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa Tuesday launched 454 houses under the programme Labondo Local Integration Project meant for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state.

The housing unit was built by United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in collaboration with the Central Emergency Fund (CERF) and Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) among others.

At the ceremony which held at Labondo in Girei Local Government Area, Governor Umaru Fintiri described the houses as qualitative, strong and durable that he said can stand the test of time.

He added that the project interventions which cover enhancement in a number of areas such as housing, education, health among which also receive priority attention by his administration.

Governor Fintiri lauded the development partners for their commitment, resilience and diligence to ensuring that the Labondo Project is executed and implemented successfully.

He urge the approximately two thousand and seven hundred beneficiaries of the houses and other interventions to cultivate good maintenance culture to ensure their sustainability.

“I am particularly delighted that the project focuses on community empowerment, sustainable housing, livelihood support, social cohesion and socio-economic development.

“Although the target beneficiaries would seem to be Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and returnees, the project clearly caters for the host community as well,” said Governor Fintiri.

He said his administration over the years has been welcoming IDPs fleeing insurgency and other forms of conflict in the North East sub-region as well as returnees from neighbouring countries such as Cameroon.

“At this juncture, I wish to call on our people and indeed all people to fervently commit ourselves to peaceful coexistence and security of lives and property.

“However, if violent conflict still occurs, we should strive to be our brothers’ keeper by collaborating to provide succour and supporting the livelihood of the unfortunate victims,” he said.

In her remarks, Chansa Kapaya, UNHCR Country Representative, expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for providing overall leadership adding that all engagements in the project was led by led local authorities and communities.

The district head of Girei, Doctor Ahmed Ibrahim Mustafa among other speakers commended the development partners for executing the initiative and urged the beneficiaries to take full ownership of the project.
