Adamawa Imposes 24-Hour Curfew on Lamurde Amid Deadly Land Clashes

In a bid to stem escalating violence, the Adamawa State Government has slapped a stringent 24-hour curfew on Lamurde Local Government Area (LGA), effective immediately, following the resurgence of bloody communal clashes that erupted Sunday evening.

The lockdown, covering the restive communities long plagued by land disputes, comes as security forces scramble to restore order and prevent further bloodshed in this volatile flashpoint.

The fresh outbreak reignites a simmering feud between the Bachama and Tsobo (Chobo) ethnic groups, whose rivalry over farmland has claimed dozens of lives this year alone.

What began as a heated quarrel among youths in July spiraled into full-scale confrontations, leaving at least 13 dead by August and displacing hundreds, with farmlands reduced to scorched earth.

A previous curfew was imposed in mid-July after 10 fatalities, but fragile truces have repeatedly frayed, underscoring the deep-seated tensions over arable land in this agricultural heartland.

In a terse statement from the Office of the Deputy Governor, Press Secretary Hussaini Hammangabdo announced the measure, directing all security agencies; police, military, and civil defense to enforce the curfew and “restore law and order with immediate effect.”

Residents are barred from streets until further notice, with exemptions only for essential workers under strict verification. “The government is appealing for peace and calm in the area,” Hammangabdo urged, emphasizing dialogue over division.
