ADC Candidates Warn: L’ship Crisis Threatens Adamawa LG Polls as Unity Call Intensifies

The Forum of ADC Local Government Chairmanship and Councillorship Candidates in Adamawa State has raised the alarm over the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state, warning that the prolonged internal dispute poses a serious threat to the party’s chances in the forthcoming Local Government Council Elections scheduled for 13th June 2026.

In a strongly worded press statement issued on Saturday, 11th April 2026, and signed by Hon. Abubakar Ahmadu (Chairman of the Forum and Chairmanship Candidate for Yola North LGA) and Dennis Kakaba (Secretary and Chairmanship Candidate for Demsa LGA), the candidates expressed deep concern that the crisis could erode the remarkable goodwill and acceptance the party currently enjoys across the 21 local government areas.

The statement reads in part: “As candidates who emerged under the leadership of Comrade Shehu Yohanna, the state party chairman, our loyalty to the leadership of the party is intact and we are actively engaged in grassroots mobilization. However, we consider this prolonged leadership dispute a serious threat to the party’s prospects in the upcoming council elections.”

The Forum noted that while the ADC is witnessing unprecedented acceptance and enthusiasm at the grassroots level—with citizens showing strong demand for the party’s vision of credible leadership, accountability, and inclusive governance—internal divisions risk undermining public confidence in its readiness to govern.

Acknowledging the existing court order that has halted party congresses pending the resolution of ongoing litigation, the candidates stressed that litigation should not indefinitely paralyze the party’s activities.

“We urge all parties involved to embrace alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Constructive dialogue, mediation, and compromise remain the most effective paths to restoring unity,” the statement added.

The candidates further emphasized the urgency of resolving the crisis before the National Convention of the ADC scheduled for Tuesday, 14th April 2026, warning that failure to do so could affect Adamawa State’s full participation in the crucial gathering where key decisions about the party’s future will be made.

They called on party leaders, elders, and key stakeholders to demonstrate statesmanship, uphold the principles of unity and sportsmanship, and prioritize the collective interest of the party over personal ambitions.

“History will judge us harshly if we allow internal disagreements to derail the progress achieved over recent times,” the Forum warned.

Drawing from their experiences on the campaign trail, the candidates revealed that the ADC has emerged as a widely accepted political platform at the grassroots, positioning the party ahead of its competitors.

They, however, stressed that this momentum can only be sustained and converted into electoral victory if the party presents a united front.

In a direct appeal, the Forum urged the National Leadership of the ADC to urgently and impartially intervene in the Adamawa crisis by establishing a reconciliation committee to engage all stakeholders and facilitate a lasting resolution.

They also encouraged respected neutral voices within the state to support peace efforts.

The statement concluded with a firm reaffirmation of the candidates’ unwavering loyalty to the ADC and its leadership in Adamawa State, as well as their commitment to securing victory in the 13th June 2026 elections.

“However, we strongly believe that our chances of success will be significantly enhanced if we approach the elections as a united and cohesive force,” the Forum declared.

The press statement comes at a critical time as political activities intensify ahead of the local government polls, with many observers watching closely to see how the ADC resolves its internal challenges in Adamawa State.
