ADC Crisis: Rep Leke Abejide Threatens to Dump Party if David Mark Faction Wins Court Battle

The crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a dramatic turn on Thursday as a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Leke Abejide, declared that he would quit the party if the court rules in favour of the faction led by former Senate President, Sen. David Mark.

Abejide, who represents the Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State and remains loyal to the Nafiu Bala-led faction of the ADC, made the revelation during an appearance on Channels Television’s political programme, “Politics Today.”

He expressed deep concerns over the growing hostility between the two factions and stated that reconciliation appears increasingly unlikely after the protracted legal battle.

Abejide hinted strongly that he may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if the David Mark faction emerges victorious in court.

“APC is the only stable party in Nigeria. Nobody wants to contest an election under a platform where the election can be overturned in court tomorrow,” he said.

The lawmaker also warned the David Mark-led faction to suspend preparations for their planned national convention and instead seek a political solution to the crisis, rather than repeating what he described as the mistake of the nullified PDP convention in Ibadan.

Earlier on Thursday, Abejide joined members of the Nafiu Bala faction in a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Abuja.

Addressing the protesters, he insisted that Sen. Nafiu Bala remains the legitimate national chairman of the ADC because he was the only member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) who did not resign.

“Nwosu, who resigned, did so without notice. There was no meeting. This new national chairman they are seeing behind me was the only party National Executive Committee member who did not resign. Though they are forging everything around saying that he resigned, but I am aware he did not resign,” Abejide declared.

The ongoing leadership tussle between the David Mark faction and the Nafiu Bala faction has left the ADC deeply divided, with both sides presenting conflicting claims and showing little willingness for reconciliation.

Many political observers now believe the courts will ultimately decide the future direction of the party.

The development adds fresh pressure to the already fragmented opposition landscape ahead of future electoral contests, as key stakeholders continue to question the stability of smaller parties in Nigeria’s political system.

As the legal battle intensifies, all eyes remain on the judiciary to provide clarity on the authentic leadership of the African Democratic Congress.
