ADC Delegates Ratify Amended Constitution, Elect David Mark as National Chairman

‎The African Democratic Congress (ADC) wrapped up its highly anticipated 2026 National Convention in Abuja on Tuesday with a show of unity and resolve, as delegates overwhelmingly approved key amendments to the party’s constitution and formally ratified the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC).

‎Emeka Ihedioha, former Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the convention’s electoral sub-committee, announced the outcomes to thunderous applause from thousands of delegates drawn from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The ratification solidifies Senator David Mark, a former Senate President, as National Chairman of the party for the next four years.

‎The convention, described by Mark himself as one of the best-organised political gatherings he has attended in his long career, also saw the party dissolve the previous Ralph Nwosu-led NWC and affirm the current leadership structure.

Delegates voted through voice and ballot processes to adopt constitutional changes aimed at strengthening internal democracy, including provisions for grassroots elections at polling unit, ward, and state levels.

‎In his closing remarks, Senator Mark praised the planning committee and declared the event the beginning of the ADC’s serious push towards Aso Rock in 2027.

“This convention has shown that democracy will not die on our watch,” he said, amid reports of earlier legal and logistical challenges the party overcame to hold the gathering.

‎The ADC also announced the expulsion of several members, including former Deputy National Chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe and others, for alleged anti-party activities and bypassing internal conflict resolution mechanisms.

‎Party stakeholders described the convention as a significant step in repositioning the ADC as a formidable opposition platform ahead of the next general elections.

Mark had earlier opened the event with a defiant message, insisting the party “will not surrender” in the face of attempts to weaken opposition voices in Nigeria.

‎The successful conclusion of the convention is expected to boost the ADC’s organisational strength and set the stage for broader alliances and mobilisation efforts in the coming months.
