A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa, Ahmed Lawal has appealed to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to grant the N225bn request by the National Population Commission (NPC) for the conduct of national population census.
Lawal in a phone chat with our reporter said, considering the huge amount allocated to the Commission by the Muhammadu Buhari led federal government, there should be no need for more funding.

He noted that the reason why the last census was not conducted was because of the fact that the period has coincided with electioneering season.
“The same commission was allocated hundreds of billions of naira and was about to conduct the exercise when the event was shifted as a result of election.

“The request for another huge amount of money is frivolous because the money given to the Commission was enough to conduct the national census.
“At this crucial point in time when the income of Nigerians has depleted as a result of hyper inflation, it will be more apt for the president to use that money to provide palliatives for Nigerians.
“I urged Mr. President to even order comprehensive investigation on how the funds given to the Commission in the past were utilized not to talk of further dissipation of our hard earned resources frivolously,” he said.
The National Population Commission, NPC had on Thursday appealed to President Bola Tinubu for an additional N225.2 billion for it to conduct a hitch-free national population and housing census in the country.
NPC Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwarra made the request while briefing the President about the activities of the Commission at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He sought the President’s approval for an additional N225.2 billion to cover training and fieldwork allowances, retraining of trainers, and the conduct of a second-class Trial Census.
