Following a flood disaster that wrecked havoc in Nassarawo Demsa in Adamawa State, the Adamawa State House of Assembly led by its Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, has urged on the state government to as a matter of urgency provide relief materials to the victims of flood disaster in Demsa LGA.
The Lawmakers however appealed to the state government and its agencies to carry out enlightenment campaigns to those who reside along river banks and other flood prone areas for them to have it at the back of their minds the specific period of flooding with a view to averting damages recorded every year.
The legislators further directed the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to be on alert in an event of such disasters and not until when there is resolution from the hallowed chamber to that effect.
The resolutions adopted by the Honourable Members was sequel to a motion on matter of public importance brought before them by Hon. Kate Raymond(Demsa Constituency) at the resumed plenary session presided by Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, today.
Earlier, Hon. Kate, intimated her colleagues on the flood disaster at Nassarawo Demsa in her constituency, and called on them to impress on the state government and its agencies to urgently reach out to the victims of the disaster so as to ameliorate the hardship faced by her people.
The female legislator told the honourable house that the flood affected households, damaged food items and other valuables; hence, her motion for the intervention of relevant authorities.
She further described the situation as pathetic considering how her electorates were left with nothing, and however impressed her colleagues to work out lasting solutions concerning the perennial flood disaster in some communities in the state.
Some of legislators including Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak(Verre), Hon Hamman tukur Yettisuri( Yada/Mbulo), and Hon. Abubakar Is a(Shelleg) who spoke on the motion, lamented a situation whereby year in year out some communities are affected by the disaster, yet they continue to live at the same flood prone areas.
The lawmakers further advocated for lasting solution on the flooding, saying that government must be proative in providing lasting solution on the problem.
After the adoption of the resolutions, the speaker,Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya Abbas, who presided over the sitting, directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolutions of the house to the executive arm for necessary action.
