In changing narrative of evidence for good governance in Adamawa State University (ADSU) Mubi, hope is being rewritten, under the leadership of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri. A quiet but determined revolution is taking place, one that places education at the heart of good governance, human capital development and communal renewal.
In October 2025, Adamawa State University ADSU, celebrated its 15th, 16th and 17th combined convocation ceremonies, a milestone occasion covering the academic sessions of 2022–2025, graduating potential and existing workforce for national development. A total of 9,225 graduates crossed the stage and toss their caps, among them are 42 first-class honours recipients, 1,734 second class upper, 5,252 second class lower, 1,842 third class and one pass degree. On the postgraduate front: 22 PhDs, 100 MSc, 47 MPA and several postgraduate diplomas were awarded.
At the ceremony, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who serves as Visitor of the university, reminded the assemblage that: “Education remains the only hope for the ordinary man. When all else fails, it is your knowledge, skills and integrity that will bail you out.” Such words of truth, rings when you consider that many of these students’ hail from communities once sidelined by conflict or neglect. This convocation is more than ceremony: it is a symbol of resilience and rising opportunity in line with government agenda for the state, as ADSU is appreciably evolving into a global entity on a time-tested tripod of research, learning and community service.
Institutional Lift-Off
Governor Fintiri’s vision for ADSU goes far beyond diplomas and degrees. The governor during his address at the just concluded convocation, made commitment to turn the institution into a solution-oriented research hub with a strong plea on the academia to join him in this quest. He further expressed commitment to expand, improve and better the standard of the university. Among the key development commitments are: The establishment of new Faculties of Medicine, Engineering and Law at ADSU, aimed at broadening academic offerings and positioning the institution as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Health Sciences Hub and Legal institution in Nigeria.
As part of his enduring legacy of renewal in education, Governor Fintiri continues to redefine the academic landscape of the state through bold innovation and visionary expansion. The establishment of the new Faculties of Medicine, Engineering and Law marks a historic milestone in the university’s journey towards academic excellence and societal relevance. The new faculties are not merely additions to the institution’s academic structure, but represent a forward-thinking and looking commitment to advancing STEM education, alongside Health Sciences, and legal studies as the driving forces of national development, especially in the state. Deliberately placing the university on the global map.
Through the Faculty of Medicine, the university seeks to produce a new generation of healthcare professionals equipped with the knowledge, compassion, and skills to respond to the increasing global demand for health professional and tackle health challenges of communities across the state and by extension Nigeria and beyond. The Faculty of Engineering is envisioned as a cradle of innovation, nurturing creative problem-solvers who will design sustainable technologies and infrastructure to power state and national growth, while the Faculty of Law will empower students with the knowledge of law and legal practice. These faculties will serve as research centres and reduce the migration of students.
The ADSU expansion progress, stands as a testament to governments unwavering commitment to a renewal of purpose, academic breadth, and impact. It reflects the governor’s determination to prepare the next generation of thinkers, healers, and innovators in Adamawa State, anchoring Adamawa State University as a beacon of progress in the Nigerian educational landscape. The Campus expansion plans, also includes internal roads network on campus, perimeter fencing for safety and security at the Abubakar Barde Campus, improved water and power infrastructure (including a proposed 5 MW solar plant) to support growth and sustainability of the institution.
Behind these statistics of numbers, are young women and men beaming in their graduation gowns, coming from all corners of the state and beyond; their lecturers now working in newly-built offices and labs, students dreaming of designing solutions for the region, and parents forecasting a great future for their wards, some first-generation graduates watching hope unfold.
As part of his deliberate move to eliminate the barriers of cost in acquiring and advancing knowledge, Governor Fintiri has also secured foreign postgraduate scholarship schemes (Project Wins) for the high-flying students of the university. The scheme will deploy 100 students to Turkey, 200 to Australia and Canada, to drive his educational reforms, signalling that human capacity-building is central to development and growth.
The governor also congratulated the award recipients of Honourary Doctorate, selected by the university for their contribution and support to society; Alhaji Mohammed Indimi, for his philanthropic and humanitarian gestures in empowerment and education for the vulnerable; Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu CON (BUA Group), for creating jobs and building local capacities in industries and support for education and academic institutions through his Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) Africa Tertiary Education Grant Scheme, and Most Rev. Dami Mamza, Catholic Bishop of Yola, a fearless intercessor and advocate of peace, for his support to persons and communities affected by conflicts including building houses for the displaced. The governor applauded the university, the award selection committee for a job well done and finally congratulate all the graduands, urging them to go and shine the light to the world.
In towns ravaged by insurgency, where schools were once shuttered or abandoned, the sight of a convocation, of cameras and proud parents, becomes almost sacred. It speaks to the reclaiming of normalcy, of dignity, of purpose. This also led to the establishment of Adamawa State College of Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Studies in Gulak, which is primed to be the best of its kind in Nigeria, scheduled to resume academic session by January 2026, as part of the Governor’s agenda to empower the people with effective, relevant and modern knowledge.
The commissioning of a modern lecture theatre added colour to the event. The theatre is financed under the Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) Africa Tertiary Education Grant Scheme, valued at ₦350 million, which is meant to create a conducive environment for learning and innovation.
The significance of Governor Fintiri’s education agenda has not gone unnoticed. As he works, the world sees: In July 2025, University of Port Harcourt conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Science in Public Administration on him in recognition of his contributions to public service, leadership and education reform.
In October 2025, Governor Fintiri was named and honoured along side other six for his Digital Transformation at the Nigeria GovTech Public Service Awards by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR). The award honoured his leadership in using technology to improve public service delivery, transparency in governance.
Another, is the Golden Award of Excellence for Education and Teacher Friendliness, which was presented to him at Eagle Square in Abuja by the Nigerian Union of Teacher (NUT) on 5 October 2025. As the governor continue to receive accolade, such acknowledgements underscore a deeper principle: that governance is not just about roads and contracts but about enabling citizens to excel in their endeavours through effective learning. This Governor Fintiri’s model, is not just departure from the stereotype of governance in Nigeria, but the emergence of a leader who harnessed every possible potential for human development and growth of his constituent.
As Governor Fintiri often reminds the people: knowledge, skills and integrity are the levers of change. In a world starving for models of hope and progress, his example offers more than inspiration, it offers a blueprint.
