Akpabio Warns Oshiomhole: “We Will Use the Same Rules to Remove You from the Senate”

Tension flared in the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio issued a stern warning to Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North), threatening to invoke Senate rules to remove him if he continues to act unruly during proceedings.

The dramatic confrontation occurred during plenary when Oshiomhole protested amendments to the Senate Standing Rules, which are widely seen as designed to influence the race for Senate Presidency in the 11th National Assembly after the 2027 general elections.

“For the last time, Senator Oshiomhole, if you become unruly in the Senate, we will use the same rules to remove you from the Senate,” Akpabio declared, according to reports from the session.

The new rules tighten eligibility criteria for presiding officers, effectively restricting the position of Senate President to returning senators with substantial experience in the chamber.

This change is believed to bar first-term senators like Oshiomhole and potential aspirants such as Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is rumoured to be eyeing a return to the Senate after his gubernatorial tenure.

Oshiomhole, a former Governor of Edo State and ex-national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), vehemently opposed the amendments, arguing they undermine fairness and the democratic rights of senators. The amendments were however adopted through a voice vote.

As of press time, Senator Oshiomhole had not issued a formal response to the Senate President’s warning. The incident underscores the growing divisions within the red chamber as lawmakers position themselves for post-2027 leadership.
