Alleged phone stealing: How Adamawa govt official used security agents and torture 17-yr-old SS 2 student to death

Shuaibu Wanbai Zumo caused the death of a minor, Abdullahi Tukur who is seventeen years old for alleged stealing of a phone (iphone 7).

Yola the state capital was thrown into an outer uproar when the news of Tukur broke out that he cannot survived the torture done to him by men of the Operation Farauta Zumo hired and dealt with him when he claimed innocent of a neighbor’s missing phone

Sources told TG NEWS that Shuaibu Wambai Zumo, a staff of the Adamawa State Scholarship Board ejected Tukur from their house by two men identified as Operation Farauta in the name of questioning .

“He was later brought back crying, with handcuffs on and thoroughly beaten. He told his Dad that he told them that he took the phone so as to spare his life because of the way he was being tortured.

“They came into the house and searched for the phone but couldn’t find it. While the search was still going on, Abdallah started vomiting blood and collapsed and the parents rushed him to the Moddibo Adama University Teaching hospital where he remained unconscious for four days and died this morning (Wednesday). It was later found that the phone was taken by someone else and not Abdallah.” source revealed

Abdullahi Tukur Abba is confirmed dead over allegedly tortured by security personnel attached to Operation Farauta in Yola

The SS 2 student was arrested on August 5th and counsel for the family of the deceased, Barrister Abubakar Hamman Diram, later confirmed to our reporter that

Abdullahi died after spending four days in a coma.

“A mobile phone was stolen in the neighbourhood and a boy claimed that he took the phone and gave it to Abdullahi.

“But he (Abdullahi) swore that he knew nothing about it and advised that tracking technology should be used to trace the phone, so the person holding it could explain where he got it from.

“Yet he was tortured until he became unconscious and consequently died today (Wednesday) at the ICU unit of the teaching hospital in Yola,” Diram said.

Barrister Diram had on August 7 filed a petition to the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, copies of which were sent to the National Human Rights Commission and the Officer in Charge of Operation Farauta, seeking justice for Abdullahi who was still lying in a coma.

The deceased father, Dr Tukur Abba said he would file a court case against the people who lodged the complaint with Operation Farauta as well as those who caused his son’s death.

“The task force often derails from its assignment of fighting robbery, banditry and activities of thugs to entertaining civil and criminal cases. In the process, they end up trampling on the rights of people”, said a resident who did not want his name revealed.

When contacted, the police spokesman in the state, Sulaiman Nguroje, a deputy superintendent of police, confirmed the incident, saying the command had launched an investigation into the case and would ensure justice prevail.

Operation Farauta, led by the military, comprises soldiers, police, operatives of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). It is charged with the task of fighting armed robbery, kidnapping and related crimes.
