Angry Ondo Youths Set Police Station Ablaze Over Detention, Death of Young Man in Custody

A police station in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, has been set ablaze by irate youths, following the alleged torture and death of a young man in police custody. The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, sparked a protest among residents and friends of the deceased, who mobilized to the police station after learning about the victim’s death. According to sources, the police were overpowered by the protesters, who stormed the station and set it on fire.

The crisis is believed to have originated from a Valentine’s Day incident, which led to the arrest and alleged torture of the young man. The protesters, who were heavily charged, also attacked the home of the individual who reported the incident to the police, setting it ablaze. The state Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has been deployed to the area to restore peace and prevent further violence.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident and stated that more policemen have been drafted to the town. The Chairman-elect of Ose Local Government Area, Barr. Clement Kolapo Ojo, has appealed for calm and urged the youths to refrain from violence and destruction.
