APC Chieftain Warns Tinubu: Don’t Rely on Governors for 2027 Re-election, Many Lack Voter Popularity

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abubakar Yusuf, has issued a stark warning to President Bola Tinubu, advising him not to bank on the support of APC governors ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a candid interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, Senator Yusuf argued that several APC governors do not enjoy genuine popularity among voters, describing their influence as potentially overstated.

“What I’m saying is that Mr. President must stand firm and not rely on the governors. There are so many of these governors that are not popular,” Yusuf stated, according to reports.

The former federal lawmaker cautioned that over-dependence on state executives could prove risky for Tinubu’s re-election bid, urging the President to focus on building broader grassroots support and addressing national issues directly to connect with ordinary Nigerians.

Yusuf, however, expressed confidence in the APC’s position, noting that the ruling party is not “jittery” about the opposition due to the lack of unity among opposition leaders. He predicted that the APC would still secure victory in 2027 but stressed the need for strategic independence from potentially weak gubernatorial allies.

The remarks come amid ongoing political realignments and defections across parties, with some governors who joined the APC from other platforms facing questions about their local acceptance.
