APC Crisis Deepens in Enugu as Top Figures Resign, Set Sights on ADC

A fresh wave of defections has rocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, as prominent members of the party’s “old bloc” have resigned, citing marginalisation, exclusion, and a breakdown of internal democracy.

Sources familiar with the development told SaharaReporters on Wednesday that the defectors are expected to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the coming days, as consultations intensify over a broader political realignment.

Among those who have dumped the ruling party are the APC’s 2023 Enugu North Senatorial candidate, Ambassador Ejike Simon Eze; former State Publicity Secretary, Chief Charles Solomon Ako; and former Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Dr. Simon Chinekwu Attah, alongside other key party stalwarts.

Speaking with journalists in Enugu, Ambassador Eze attributed his resignation to what he described as undemocratic practices and the deliberate sidelining of longstanding party members following the influx of new entrants allegedly aligned with Governor Peter Mbah.

Eze lamented that despite personally funding his senatorial campaign in 2023, he received neither support from the party nor consideration for any political appointment afterward.

“I flew the flag of the party as the 2023 senatorial candidate for Enugu North Senatorial District with personally sponsored campaign funds,” he said, describing the situation as “abnormal and wickedness.”

He further revealed that he had appealed to Governor Mbah to integrate old APC members into governance structures to foster unity and strengthen support for both the governor and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but said the appeal yielded no results.

Echoing similar sentiments, former state spokesperson Charles Solomon Ako cited exclusion and the erosion of internal democracy as reasons for his exit. In his resignation letter, Ako said long-standing members had effectively become “internally displaced persons” within the party.

“It’s very unfortunate that at present, the new occupiers have internally displaced most of its old members and rendered us ‘prisoners of conscience’ in the party we laboured for,” he stated.

Also resigning, Dr. Simon Chinekwu Attah pointed to persistent issues of marginalisation, lack of inclusiveness, and weakened internal democracy as factors that made it difficult for him to continue contributing meaningfully to the party.

“Recent developments within the party… have made it increasingly difficult for me to effectively contribute to the progress of the party,” Attah said, adding that his decision followed extensive consultations with his supporters and political associates.

In a statement confirming Eze’s exit, his media team said the decision was reached after “deep reflection and careful consideration of recent developments,” stressing his continued commitment to “justice, equity, and true democratic values.”

The spate of resignations underscores growing tensions within the APC in Enugu State, particularly between long-standing members and newer entrants reportedly aligned with Governor Mbah, who is said to have joined the party from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Party insiders indicated that more defections may be imminent, with discussions already underway for a coordinated move to the ADC as an alternative political platform ahead of future elections.

“The movement continues. The mission remains the people,” Eze’s camp declared, signalling what could be the beginning of a significant political shift in the state.
