Former Jigawa State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has predicted a looming fracture within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming that its National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and other prominent members may soon defect to the PDP.
The bold assertion was made during a keynote address at the PDP congress held at Aminu Kano Triangle in Jigawa, stirring significant political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lamido, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed confidence in the PDP’s resurgence, stating, “I’m confident that all those who left the PDP will return, including Ganduje, because very soon, the APC will burst and split into factions, having accommodated people with different mindsets.”
He predicted that within six months, defectors to the APC would return, positioning the PDP to “rise with full force to wrest power in 2027.”

The PDP has faced significant setbacks, with high-profile defections to the APC, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire Delta State PDP structure.
Other opposition lawmakers from parties like the Labour Party and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have also joined the APC, raising concerns among analysts about a potential drift toward a one-party state.
Lamido, however, urged PDP members not to be discouraged, attributing these defections to “fear of intimidation and harassment” by federal agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
As Nigeria’s political landscape heats up, Lamido’s provocative prediction underscores the fluidity of party loyalties and the challenges facing both the APC and PDP. Whether the APC will indeed split or continue its dominance remains a focal point of speculation, with the 2027 elections looming on the horizon.
