A peaceful night of devotion turned into a harrowing ordeal on Friday as armed men launched a brutal assault on a mountain-top prayer vigil in the Egbola area along Agbaja Road, leaving worshippers in panic and despair.

Eyewitnesses reported that the tranquil scene quickly devolved into a nightmare as gunfire rang out. “They came shooting to scare everyone. People were running in different directions. Some were captured and taken away into the forest,” recounted a local source familiar with the incident, as quoted by Daily Trust.

In a remarkable turn of events, local vigilantes swiftly mobilized in response to the attack, engaging the kidnappers in a fierce gun battle. Their efforts led to the successful rescue of a woman identified as Mary Adams Gure, who managed to escape the clutches of her captors during the skirmish.
“The vigilantes were mobilised quickly and engaged the gunmen in a gunfight. In the process, Mary Gure was rescued. A search-and-rescue operation is ongoing to find the remaining victims,” stated a member of the vigilante group.
As of press time, the total number of worshippers abducted remains unclear, with ongoing efforts to locate and rescue those still missing. Calls to the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya, seeking further information went unanswered.
