A Nigerian Army officer and medical doctor, Lt. Samson Haruna, has tragically died after being set on fire by his wife during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The shocking incident, which occurred on September 22, 2025, has left the military community and residents in mourning.
According to sources, the altercation between Lt. Haruna, who served as the Regimental Medical Officer for the 6 Battalion, and his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna, escalated into a horrific act of violence. During the heated argument, Mrs. Haruna allegedly doused her husband with petrol and set him ablaze, causing severe burns.
Military personnel at the scene acted swiftly, stabilizing the officer at the barracks’ Military Reference Section before transferring him to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Lt. Haruna succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have arrested Mrs. Haruna, who is now in custody as the Nigerian Army and relevant agencies investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The tragedy has sparked conversations about domestic violence and mental health support within military communities.
