Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu has been released by the Nigerian Army.
Recall that the actor was apprehended by troops for wearing Biafra outfit at Upper Iweka Road, Onitsha, Anambra State while sharing food with less privileged persons.
Two soldiers were said to have wrestled him to the ground and dragged him away.
However, actress Chizzy Alichi, while giving an update on Agu’s arrest in a post shared via her Instagram page, said he has finally been released.
“Uncle Chiwetalu Agu has been released. He is safe and sound.
”All thanks to God and everyone that contributed in one way or the other,” she wrote.
Meanwhile, actress, Shan George, reacting earlier on the matter, frowned at Agu for denying supporting secessionists in the South-East.
Recall that Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director, Army Public Relations, had said the actor was arrested for inciting members of the public and soliciting support for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
But a video after the actor’s arrest, showed him saying that the clothing he wore had nothing to do with the Biafran flag.
He said he was sharing bread to hungry Nigerians and not ascertaining for anyone to join Biafra.
He further noted that his outfit was just a dress with a rising sun and not anyway representing the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
But Shan George, reacting in a post via her Instagram page, advised the actor to own up to his fight for freedom.
She wrote, ”My dear brother, you are clearly wearing a Biafra flag and you should own it with your full chest.
”I don’t get all the rising sun English you are speaking. I personally see nothing wrong in certain people fighting for their freedom.
“Nigeria fought for theirs from the British before 1960. Scotland and the rest fought for theirs too, at least you were not carrying any arms, fighting for freedom peacefully shouldn’t be a crime, own your fight with your full chest.”
Emeka Ike, another Nollywood actor, in his reaction, criticised the arrest of Agu and implored the Nigerian Government to immediately release his colleague.
“Release Chiwetalu Agu now, release all victims of conscience.
“Your belief is you, your ideology is you. Tyranny never pays, dialogue is golden.
“Release Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho. The world is watching history never forgets. Heal Nigeria in Jesus name,” Ike wrote.
