An unexplained arson attack on the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Kontagora, Niger State, has left the congregation reeling. The attack, which occurred on August 10, 2024, is believed to be the work of Islamist extremists.
This is not the first time the church has been targeted. In 2006, it was burned down during a religious riot, and there was another attempt to burn it in 2013. Church leaders have reported the incidents to the authorities, but no action has been taken.
The latest attack began at 4 am and raged on for three hours, destroying music instruments, audio and TV sets, and plastic chairs before setting the church ablaze. The congregation has reported the incident to the police, DSS, Kontagora Emirate Council, Niger State Government, and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Religious extremists were behind the attack,
The Kontagora Emirate Council had previously asked the congregation to relocate, but no new location was provided. The church’s file was also declared missing, and a new clause was inserted requiring the signatures of eight neighbors, who refused to sign.
Pastor Samson Ogbebor speculated that religious extremists were behind the attack, while Rev. Bulus Yohanna, Chairman of CAN, condemned the attack as barbaric and uncalled for.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago strongly condemned the attack and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, no arrests have been made, and the Kontagora Emirate Council has refused to comment.
