Archbishop of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) who doubles as the President of The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Most Rev. Dr. Musa Panti Filibus, has congratulated the outspoken Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, who turned 70 on 31st August 2022. The Archbishop’s message, which was made public through the LCCN Communications office in a statement released on behalf of the entire leadership and members of the LCCN.
“On behalf of the Council of Bishops, Board of Trustees, the General Church Council, and the entire Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN), I wish to congratulate and join you in thanksgiving to God as you celebrate your 70th birthday.” It read.
The Archbishop described Bishop Kukah in his statement as, “an inspiring witness of a prophetic preacher.” He said the Catholic Bishop’s story is that of someone who is unwavering in his passion for peace rooted in justice, equity, and dignity for all humanity. “Indeed, a servant and disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
He asserts that Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah has firmly stood with those suffering from unjust systems and struggling for liberation. And that he represents a great sign of hope that has inspired and challenged many to continue in the struggles for freedom. He appreciated the Priest for remaining defiant in changing the horrible narrative of our nation for the sake of present and future generations.
Archbishop Musa said, Kukah’s unwavering position about human rights, justice and fairness is a prove of commitment for the common good of all Nigerians. “Your consistent voice for the common good of Nigerians has left no one in doubt of your love for this country despite the enormous ecclesiastical tasks on you.” He said.
Archbishop Panti thanked Bishop Hassan Kukah for using all avenues at his disposal to dispel injustice and preach peace and unity. “From the pulpit to the academia, from the worship place to the public square, from ecumenical engagements to interreligious dialogue tables, and at any God given opportunity, you have continued to speak out for justice even in the most inconvenient and difficult situations with courage and humility.”
The statement further stated that, the Priest is never afraid or discouraged to bare his mind on what is right and just as he always admonishes or rebukes any ill with an open mind and simplicity without mincing words.
The Archbishop said, “Your engagements with civil societies, and governmental institutions as well as the ecumenical and interreligious bodies further demonstrates your faith in Christ and love for God.”
In the statement, Archbishop Musa stated, “As you mark 70 years of your life, I do not intend to tell you what you already know, it is not time to down tools but to push harder. From over forty years of your work, you know well how our nation is polarized today, marked by dividing walls of religious, political, and ethnic differences and intolerance especially in the Northern part of Nigeria where you and I belong. Sadly, there seems to be no end in sight yet. We have come to a difficult moment that we take pleasure in speaking more of differences than what holds us together as a nation. Our youths do not see a future. And we can go on with the lamentable realities.”
Most Rev. Dr. Panti Filibus, reminded Bishop Kukah that as he advances in age his wisdom and experience is most needed both for the church and society. “Your leadership is needed now more than before, your voice must continue to speak out loud to dispel the crowded noise of injustice, corruption, nepotism, and sin that is on the increase in our nation. God remains our help in these distressing times.”
He ended by saying, “Dear brother Matthew, as you celebrate your 70th birthday, we pray that God who has been faithful in your life will multiply His grace upon you and continue to bless you with good health, sound mind and strength to continue the ministry entrusted to you. Amen. Happy 70th Birthday Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah!”
