Atiku Abubakar Declares 2027 Presidential Bid as His Final Attempt

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced that the 2027 general election will mark his last attempt to contest for the presidency of Nigeria.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Arise TV, the veteran politician, who has run for the office multiple times without success, made the revelation while addressing his political future amid growing speculation ahead of the next polls.

Atiku, a leading figure in the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated clearly: “The 2027 election will be my last attempt at contesting for president.”

The declaration comes as political realignments intensify, with Atiku and other opposition leaders positioning themselves within the ADC coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Despite persistent rumours of withdrawal or stepping aside for other aspirants, Atiku has consistently dismissed such reports as fabricated and misleading.

Atiku has previously contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) banner, most notably in 2023 when he emerged as the main opposition candidate.

His latest assertion is expected to reshape discussions within the opposition ranks, particularly in the ADC, where multiple presidential aspirants are already jostling for position.

Atiku has earlier pledged to support whoever emerges as the party’s flag bearer, emphasising unity and collective effort to unseat the incumbent administration.

The former Vice President has repeatedly cited his deep concern for Nigeria’s development, economic challenges, and national unity as the driving force behind his continued political engagement.

Supporters see him as an experienced leader with a proven track record in governance and private sector enterprise, while critics argue that younger leaders should be given greater opportunity.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, Atiku’s declaration is likely to energise his loyal base while prompting fresh debates on zoning, generational shift, and opposition strategy.

The statement has already sparked reactions across social media and political circles, with some describing it as a “last kick of the dice” and others hailing it as a demonstration of unwavering commitment to public service.

Atiku Abubakar served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He remains one of the most influential voices in Nigerian politics, particularly in the northern region.
