Definitely Vice President Atiku Abubakar( A A) is a Colossus, meaning he is a giant in the political and economic minefield of Nigeria. Political Brinkmanship which he engages in simply means taking political actions that are dangerous or confrontational without taking precautionary measures for the sole purpose of forcing a desired outcome.

These are his character traits: he is tenacious, steadfast, exceptionally courageous, strategic, generous and highly detribalized. His minuses. He is too rigid when he takes a position and hardly can anybody make him change his position even when it is obvious that it will cost him a political fortune. That only two persons who are now dead could make him change his decision. The late Shehu Yar’Adua ( his political and business mentor) and the late Lamido of Adamawa, Dr Aliyu Mustapha. Just like me, he suffers from toxic verbal diarrhea. He could use both fair and foul means to push his political agenda. I shall validate most of the aforementioned assertions with empirical evidence.

A A shot himself in the lime light with the lifting of ban on politics by IBB in the late 1980s. He joined forces with his political mentor Shehu Yar’Adua to form the people’s front( PF). Together they formed a formidable movement. He demonstrated his prowess in strategy and generosity in the defunct Gongola and Adamawa states having formed alliances through the nooks and crannies of the two states to the extent a lot of his political associates are still on his pay roll up today.

When PF couldn’t be registered like all the political Associations, PF gravitated to SDP, one of the two political parties that was decreed into existence by IBB. The other was NRC. In Gongola later Adamawa state, A A sought refuge in SDP. The move came with catastrophic consequences. Reason: his group met strange bedfellows in SDP because party was largely populated by the unregistered PSP whose sole aim was to produce a Christian minority Governor in person of late Bala Takaya.

The group captured the entire Exco with Boss Mustapha as Chairman. So when it was time for the primaries for the governorship, it was easy for A A to be trounced. But A A had other ideas. Remember I said one of his character traits is to win through fair and foul means. His opened his foul fangs.

Knowing he was defeated by Bala Takaya with just few local governments remaining, he organized the escape of the Returning Officer who went to Jos to announce a fake result that A A won, quite a very embarrassing and scandalous behavior and it was a dent to his democratic credentials. Instead of revalidating the actual winner, the two front runners A A and Takaya were disqualified. Even when the primary was repeated, Bala Takaya group that fielded Boss Mustapha won. But A A again displayed anti democratic behaviour by mobilizing his group which worked for NRC’s candidate to trounce his party’s candidate.

Another test of his character was when presidential primaries of SDP and NRC were nullified by IBB, another primaries were arranged excluding those that contested in the first primaries. His Boss Gen Shehu Yar’Adua who was coasting to victory in the first primaries was also disqualified. He threw his weight behind A A as his preferred candidate. The front runners for the contest were MKO Abiola, Kingibe and A A. They came 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Being 3rd in the contest, he became a beautiful pride courted by Abiola and Kingibe. Against his wish, he was instructed by Yar’Adua to step down for Abiola which he did grudgingly. This confirmed my assertion that it was only Yar’Adua and the late lamido that could make him change his position.

After June 12 1993 election, freely won by Abiola, but was scuttled by IBB, A A plotted his next move which came in 1998 when Abacha died and the political space was opened. The power Appalachia in the country came together and agreed that power must be shifted to South, particularly South West hard done by the scuttling.
