Vice President Kashim Shettima has playfully warned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to expect more verbal sparring from him in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. Despite referring to Atiku as “Baba” – a term of respect for an elder – in private conversations, Shettima joked that he’ll be taking more “hot shots” at Atiku in the upcoming election season. This lighthearted jab was made at a symposium in Abuja, where Atiku was in attendance, and even prompted a smile from the former Vice President himself.
Atiku has been making headlines lately with his claims that the current administration is undermining democracy and trying to weaken opposition parties. He’s also accused the presidency of offering bribes to opposition parties to reduce their influence. In response, Atiku has called on opposition leaders to form a coalition to unseat the Tinubu-led administration in 2027.

In a more serious tone, Shettima urged leaders to put aside their differences and work together for the benefit of the Nigerian people. He emphasized the importance of unity, stating that Nigeria’s success is crucial for the future of Africa as a whole.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, it’s clear that the political landscape is already heating up, and Shettima’s comments are just the beginning of what promises to be a lively and contentious campaign season.
