Bandits Storm ECWA Church During Service in Kwara, Kidnap Worshippers

Gunmen stormed the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Sunday, March 22, 2026, abducting several worshippers during an ongoing church service.

The attackers arrived at the worship centre amid the regular Sunday gathering, firing sporadic gunshots that triggered widespread panic among congregants. Worshippers scattered in different directions as the gunmen forcibly took away members of the congregation.

Initial reports indicate that eight worshippers were abducted in the incident. However, joint security operatives—including police, forest guards, and local vigilantes—responded swiftly to the attack. Their prompt intervention enabled three of the victims to escape or be rescued, leaving five others still in captivity as efforts continue to secure their release.

The Kwara State Government swiftly condemned the assault, describing it as a disturbing and cowardly act targeting a place of worship.

In a statement issued by Commissioner for Communications Bolanle Olukoju, the government praised the immediate response of security forces and community groups for facilitating the escape of three victims.

“The government charges all security stakeholders to intensify efforts toward rescuing the remaining victims and apprehending those responsible,” the statement read.

It also urged ongoing collaboration between security agencies, local vigilantes, and community members to address the rising threat of criminal activities in the region.

Authorities noted that ongoing forest combing operations have made progress in curbing banditry in affected areas, and the state reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through sustained security interventions.

This incident follows a pattern of attacks on religious centres in parts of Nigeria, including a previous assault on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, several months earlier.

The ECWA Fate-Tanke District Church Council in Ilorin has expressed concern over the abduction of its members, with calls for prayers and support for the affected families as security operations to track down the perpetrators remain active.

Residents of Omugo and surrounding communities are on edge, with heightened calls for improved security measures to prevent further attacks on innocent civilians during religious activities. Authorities have not yet released details on the identities of the victims or suspects.
