Veteran journalist, publisher, and politician, Dele Momodu, has called for urgent national reconciliation, re-orientation, and reconstruction as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
In a statement titled “Time for National Reconciliation, Re-Orientation & Reconstruction,” Momodu expressed concern over what he described as growing political tensions and deepening divisions across the country, warning that unchecked hostility could have far-reaching consequences for national unity.
The former presidential aspirant predicted that the 2027 presidential election could evolve into a major contest between incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing the anticipated race as a “battle of the titans.”
According to him, while another political force may emerge as witnessed during the 2023 elections, it may face significant challenges in matching the influence and political structures of the leading contenders.
Momodu urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to redefine its political strategy by positioning itself as a bridge between traditional and modern political ideologies, experienced politicians and technocrats, as well as diverse regional interests.
He argued that such an approach could help foster national cohesion and provide a viable platform for addressing the country’s socio-political challenges.
“The present combustive tensions and absolute chaos cannot be allowed to continue. It will consume all of us,” he warned, emphasizing the need for leaders and citizens alike to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and issue-based politics.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s political history, Momodu called for a return to the ideals and principles championed by the nation’s founding leaders, including Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, and Obafemi Awolowo.
He noted that although the country’s founding fathers were not without flaws, they left behind legacies rooted in vision, ideology, and nation-building, qualities he believes are increasingly absent from contemporary politics.
The media entrepreneur also lamented what he described as the rise of “politics of gangsterism,” arguing that the trend has weakened democratic values and heightened ethnic and religious rivalries across the country.
Momodu stressed that Nigeria must rebuild trust among its diverse populations and strengthen the bonds between the North and South to preserve national stability and progress.
He concluded by urging political leaders, parties, and citizens to act decisively in promoting unity and constructive engagement before existing divisions become more difficult to overcome.
“We must act before it is too late,” he stated.
