The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent flood warning for 13 states as the rainy season intensifies, raising concerns about flash flooding across Nigeria. With several communities already grappling with localized flooding, NiMet has called for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate risks.
Akwa Ibom State faces the highest likelihood of flash flooding, particularly in urban centers and low-lying areas, due to heavy rainfall and poor drainage systems.
NiMet has also flagged 12 other states with notable risks: Sokoto, Zamfara, Plateau, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Abia, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ekiti, Delta, and Rivers.

As of June 2025, intense rainfall has triggered localized flooding in several regions, exacerbated by blocked water channels and inadequate drainage infrastructure.
Urban areas and riverine communities are particularly vulnerable, with reports of rising water levels disrupting daily life and threatening livelihoods.
To minimize the impact of potential floods, NiMet has outlined critical safety measures. Residents should ensure gutters, storm drains, and canals are free of debris to prevent water buildup. Those in high-risk zones are urged to move to higher ground during heavy rainfall. NiMet also advises preparing an emergency kit with essentials like water, food, medications, batteries, a flashlight, a power bank, and waterproofed documents. During flooding, disconnect electricity and gas to prevent electrocution and fires.
In hilly or coastal areas, planting trees and reinforcing slopes can reduce erosion and landslide risks. Communities are encouraged to engage in local safety campaigns and share verified information from trusted sources.
Timely evacuation and preparation are critical to saving lives, and residents should monitor NiMet’s weather forecasts and alerts via radio, TV, or official social media channels.
NiMet emphasizes that proactive preparation and awareness are key to staying safe this rainy season. “Your safety starts with awareness. Be prepared, stay alert, and act early,” the agency stated.
