Tragedy struck Egwuma, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, as armed invaders killed two soldiers, a village head, and six residents. The attack occurred around 5 pm on Tuesday. Locals reported that the attackers stole the soldiers’ weapons, including a gun, after killing two and injuring one.
A former State House of Assembly member, Sule Audu, confirmed the incident, stating that the bandits attacked through the Akile axis, bypassing stationed soldiers. They opened fire on residents, killing nine people, including the village head and two soldiers.
The Police Public Relations Officer and Nigerian Army are yet to comment on the incident
The attackers, believed to have come from Nasarawa and Kogi states, have long occupied some Agatu communities. Soldiers had previously helped repel attacks, but the affected village had been deserted until Sunday when residents returned, assured of safety.
