Boat Accident Claims 26 Lives in Kogi, Governor Vows Enhanced Waterway Safety

A devastating boat accident on the River Niger has claimed the lives of 26 traders traveling from Ibaji Local Government Area in Kogi State to Ilushi market in Edo State, plunging the state into mourning. The incident, which occurred on the evening of Tuesday, September 30, 2025, has left families and communities in grief.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi State’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, the death toll from the tragedy has risen to 26. “This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, as well as the entire Ibaji Local Government Area, in this moment of grief,” the statement read.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and directed the State Emergency Management Agency and local authorities to provide immediate support and relief to those affected. In response to the tragedy, the governor pledged to intensify efforts in collaboration with federal agencies to enhance safety measures on Kogi’s waterways to prevent future incidents.

Governor Ododo also urged Nigerian citizens, particularly those in riverine communities, to prioritize safety by avoiding overloading boats and using life jackets and other precautionary measures.

“The Government of Kogi State stands with the people of Ibaji LGA and will continue to support them through this difficult time,” he affirmed.

The tragic accident underscores the urgent need for improved safety regulations and infrastructure on Nigeria’s waterways, as communities mourn the loss of loved ones and rally for support in the wake of this disaster.
