As the saying goes, every greatness starts small and every great distance covered starts with a step. Boss Gidahyelda Mustapha CFR is indeed one great Nigerian with less echo of his push for a greater Nigeria. He has sown the seed of hard work and sacrifice to the development of Nigeria right from the third republic.

As a practitioner in law, he has contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s legal jurisprudence both in practice and offering corporate social responsibility to both individuals and country. In 1988/89, Mustapha was inaugurated a member of the Constituent Assembly, a body responsible for drafting the Nigerian constitution of the third republic. While in 2000, he was also a member of the Presidential Committee tasked by President Olusegun Obasanjo to investigate the activities of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) to ascertain the prudent and judicious implementation of public finance of the programme. His contribution to law has attracted to him, many national and international recognitions and membership of legal organizations.

In Politics, Mustapha is a political giant, both in local, state and national politics, but a silent political achiever because he neither discuss his support to great political victory nor brag about his political successes. In 1989, Mustapha was the State Chairman, Peoples Solidarity Party (PSP) in the defunct Gongola State a party among the several political parties disbanded by the then military Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida. At the formation and registration of Social Democratic Party (SDP) Mustapha became the State Chairman between
1990 and 1991, He ran for Adamawa State Governorship in 1991 under the party. The history of Nigeria’s democracy is never complete without the establishment of the June 12 Struggle: permit me to let it out to a broader knowledge of Nigerians that Boss Mustapha was an active participant in the struggle for enthronement of democracy and democratic culture and principle of inclusiveness in Nigeria during the June 12 struggle of 1993. He, Boss was at a time reporting to Amb. Babagana Kingibe, the then Running Mate to MKO Abiola at the Collation Centre alongside the Late Mohammed Waziri who was the SDP Party’s Agent at the center. He was also the Deputy National Chairman of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a party was among the 3 major parties that were merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 6th of February 2013 that led to the electoral victory of the APC in 2015. Indeed, Boss Mustapha is a Game Changer.
Midterm into the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari’s led government, Mustapha was appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) on 30 October, 2017, taking over from Babachir David Lawal. Taking his oath of office on 1 November 2017 during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council, he hit the ground running in reposition government administration and public governance. For his selfless commitment to fatherland, Boss gave his all in the fight of the dreaded virus COVID – 19 that ravaged the entire world at a time, serving as the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. But for his prompt, proactive and conviction of Country First, Nigeria recorded less infection and mortality rate in the fight against the virus through putting all the necessary measures in place and utilizing all available public funding for the safety of Nigerian lives, even to the detriment of his own. Nigeria survived the COVID – 19 scourge because the man at the frontline is a man of sincere purpose with the magic wand that even the so called developed countries in term of medicine; such as UK, UAS, China, India etc. suffered more casualties than Nigeria, wandering what Nigeria did differently. The answer was later made clear that the magic wand was actually Boss Mustapha, the Chairman Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
Mustapha served as SGF from 1 November, 2017 to 29 May, 2023 and recorded tremendous achievements in government administration. Few among which are:
• The Electoral Amendment Act (2022) which was used for the 2023 General Election and the Not Too Young to Run Bill (2018) was finally signed.
• Administered the processes of President Buhari’s engaging the “biggest and most ambitious Federal infrastructure program since Nigeria’s Independence.” The establishment of the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp) with a Trillion-Naira seed capital provided by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC). To tackle Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit and generate a growth multiplier effect across critical sectors
• Boss was at the helm of affairs of government at the completion and commissioning of the long awaited Second Niger Bridge.
• The dredging of Warri Port and reforms in the maritime and oil and gas industries and many more.
His stewardship prowess has aimed him accolades from home and abroad, in and out of office: His Principal and Boss, President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2022, confer on him a National Honour of Commander of the Order of Federal Republic (CFR) in recognition of his contribution to the successes achieved through his office for the Federal Government. At his completion of office, on the 15 of July, 2023 in the city of Yola, St. Monica’s Cathedral of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) under the leadership of Most Reverend Musa Panti Filibus, the Adamawa Archbishop and President Lutheran World Federation, organized a Special Thanksgiving Service in his honour to celebrate him and thank God for a successful and fruitful term in office, where encomiums were pored upon him, describing him as a godly leader of note, with the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and other notable Nigerians of diverse party affiliation in attendance.
After his tenure as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mustapha have continued to receive commendations for his selfless service to fatherland, both from corporate and individuals of highly and lowly place in society. Recent of all, is the conferment of a Doctorate Degree (Honorary) in Law by the management and Governing Council of Gombe State University, commending him of his stewardship to the nation as SGF and his contribution to nation building and human capital development across the nation.

Dr. Boss Gidahyelda Mustapha, born 1956, is a born and nurtured leader, a silent achiever who achieves great result, but make no publication of it, for he does it for the sake of humanity. A detribalized Nigerian politician per excellence and a learned gentleman of the Bar: a member of the African Bar Association, Common Wealth Lawyers Association, International Bar Association and Human Right Institute. A humble man to the core, who honors all men not minding their social and religious status and always giving back to society, emulating the virtues and training of his parents.

As men of goodwill continue to celebrate your political and humanitarian achievement and support to humanity in and out of public office, and with the recent conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law by the Gombe State University, which is indeed not surprising, for your ingenuity in the service of country and humanity is just but imagined. I therefore join the good people of Nigeria to say a Big Congratulations as we wish you greater height in future endevours.

Congratulations Dr. Barr. Boss Gidahhyelda Mustapha CFR

This is piece is to encourage selfless service to humanity
