BREAKING: Court Halts Adamawa ADC Congresses Hours Before Kickoff as Factional Crisis Explodes

In a dramatic last-minute intervention, a court has ordered the immediate suspension of the All Democratic Congress (ADC) state congresses scheduled to commence today, Thursday, April 9, 2026, following an urgent suit filed by factional state chairman, Shehu Yohanna.

The ruling throws the already fractured ADC in Adamawa into deeper uncertainty, just as the party was set to hold ward and local government congresses aimed at electing new executives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC in the state has been crippled by a bitter three-way factional war. One group remains loyal to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, and is reportedly backing former Governor Ahmadu Umaru Bindow for the governorship ticket.

A second faction is aligned with Aisha Binani, who has openly declared her intention to contest the governorship under the ADC platform.

The third faction is led by Shehu Yohanna, who served as the party’s chairman before the ADC was adopted as the coalition platform for the opposition.

Senator Ishaku Abbo, who had been identified with the Babachir Lawal camp, has also boycotted the congresses. In a strongly worded statement, Abbo accused the party of refusing to negotiate with Aisha Binani over the contentious issue of party structure and leadership positions.

Aisha Binani herself has equally distanced herself from the congresses, describing them as being unilaterally organised by the Babachir Lawal faction without broad consultation.

Party sources say the court order, secured by Yohanna’s faction, effectively freezes all congress activities until the substantive suit is heard, dealing a major blow to attempts by any single group to impose its will on the party structure.

The development comes as opposition parties intensify preparations for the next off-cycle and general elections, with Adamawa widely regarded as a key battleground state.

As of press time, neither the national leadership of the ADC nor the Babachir Lawal faction had issued an official reaction to the court ruling.

Political observers, however, warn that the deepening crisis could significantly weaken the party’s chances in future polls if the factions fail to reconcile.
