Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), sending shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape. The announcement, made earlier today during a press conference at the Government House in Asaba, marks a significant realignment in the state’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Oborevwori, who assumed office in May 2023 under the PDP banner, cited “irreconcilable differences” with the party’s leadership and a desire to align with a “progressive vision for Delta State and Nigeria” as key reasons for his defection.
Flanked by senior APC chieftains, including members of the party’s National Working Committee, the governor expressed confidence that his move would bolster development efforts in the state.
“This decision was not taken lightly,” Oborevwori said, addressing a room packed with journalists and party loyalists. “After deep reflection and consultation with my constituents, I am convinced that the APC offers the best platform to deliver on my promises to the people of Delta State. Together, we will build a stronger, more prosperous future.”

The defection comes amid speculations of internal strife within the PDP, both at the state and national levels, with analysts suggesting that Oborevwori’s exit could trigger a wave of defections among other party stalwarts in the region. Political observers have also pointed to the APC’s growing influence in the South-South geopolitical zone as a factor that may have swayed the governor’s decision.
APC leaders wasted no time in welcoming Oborevwori into their fold. In a statement released shortly after the announcement, the party’s National Chairman praised the governor’s “bold and visionary leadership,” describing his move as a “game-changer” for the APC’s foothold in Delta State. A grand reception is reportedly being planned to formally integrate him into the party.
