BREAKING: INEC Postpones Nationwide Voter Revalidation Exercise Until After 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the indefinite postponement of its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise, shifting the entire operation until after the 2027 General Election.

In a press statement issued on Friday, April 10, 2026, following an emergency meeting with all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), INEC said the decision was taken after thorough deliberations on the exercise.

The Commission described the voter revalidation as a critical component of its mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters.

The exercise was designed to verify and review existing voter records, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, ensure accuracy of personal data, and give registered voters the opportunity to confirm or correct their details.

Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in Nigeria.

The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

This development comes as a major update to Nigeria’s electoral calendar, with the Commission choosing to prioritise other preparatory activities ahead of the 2027 polls.
