BREAKING: Kebbi Sets Dates for Iconic Argungu International Fishing Festival: February 11–14

The Kebbi State Government has officially announced February 11 to 14, 2026, as the dates for the highly anticipated Argungu International Fishing Festival, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural events with deep historical roots and global recognition.

The announcement was made by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, who addressed journalists following an expanded meeting of the State Festival Main Committee and the Emirate Local Organising Committee, held at the Deputy Governor’s Office on Friday.

The festival, which began centuries ago as a peace initiative between the Sokoto Caliphate jihadists and the Kanta Kingdom, has evolved into a powerful symbol of reconciliation and unity. UNESCO has since recognized it as an international cultural event, highlighting its significance beyond Nigeria’s borders.

The Emir reflected on its post-Nigerian Civil War role:   “At the end of the civil war, the festival brought together fishermen from different parts of the country to symbolise unity during the Yakubu Gowon administration.”

This year’s edition is poised to draw dignitaries, tourists, and participants from across the globe, offering a unique platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Argungu Kingdom.

The Kebbi State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Main Committee, Senator Umar Tafida, assured that preparations are in full swing. Various subcommittees have been constituted to handle logistics, venue readiness, hospitality, security, and prize awards for winners.

“We have made comprehensive arrangements for the event, including venue preparation, hospitality, and the provision of awards for deserving winners,” Senator Tafida stated.

He further urged committee members: “Do not relent in your efforts until we achieve a successful festival.”

The Argungu International Fishing Festival remains a vibrant celebration of tradition, unity, and sporting excellence — where thousands of fishermen armed with traditional gourds (calabashes) compete in the iconic mass fishing spectacle on the River Rima.

With just weeks to go, anticipation is building for what promises to be another unforgettable chapter in this historic cultural extravaganza.
