In a significant development within Nigeria’s political landscape, Ahmed Yayari Mohammed has accepted his appointment as the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective October 13, 2024.

Mohammed’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the PDP, as the party seeks to revamp its image and rekindle the hope and aspiration of its members. In his acceptance speech, Mohammed acknowledged the domestic challenges facing the party and pledged to lead the charge in restoring confidence among members.
Ahmed Yayari Mohammed emphasized that the party has not satisfactorily carried out its critical role as a virile opposition in a democracy, citing conflicts of interest that have elevated personal or political agendas above party interest. This, he noted, has had a debilitating effect on the party’s ability to perform effectively.
National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership will be guided strictly by the PDP Constitution, ensuring fairness to all members regardless of status, position, or state
Mohammed assured that the National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership will be guided strictly by the PDP Constitution, ensuring fairness to all members regardless of status, position, or state. He identified his primary goal as restoring confidence among members by convening the long-overdue National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for October 24, 2024.
In line with the party’s Constitution, Mohammed requested the North Central Zone to nominate a replacement to serve out the tenure of former National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu. This nominee will be considered and approved by the NEC at the October 24 meeting.
Mohammed sought cooperation, support, and advice from colleagues, party organs, governors, the Board of Trustees, National Assembly Caucus, leaders, stakeholders, and members to ensure a successful NEC meeting.
I seek and solicit the cooperation, support, and advice from my colleagues NWC members, all Organs of the Party… towards a successful NEC meeting that we can all be proud of
“I seek and solicit the cooperation, support, and advice from my colleagues NWC members, all Organs of the Party… towards a successful NEC meeting that we can all be proud of,” Mohammed said.
With this new leadership, the PDP aims to reposition itself as a strong and effective opposition party, playing its critical role in Nigeria’s democracy.
