This variant shows signs of increased transmissibility compared to other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.
In response to this development, the ministry has called for immediate activation of alert systems in hospitals nationwide. Healthcare providers are advised to maintain a heightened index of suspicion for COVID-like symptoms and to collaborate with stakeholders to share critical data. Enhanced monitoring protocols are also recommended to track the new variant’s spread.

The XEC variant, first detected in Germany in August, is a recombinant strain resulting from a merger of two pre-existing COVID subvariants: KS.1.1 and KP.3.3. This new variant has been spreading rapidly, with over 600 cases identified in 27 countries across Europe, North America, and Asia.
