BREAKING NEWS: NUC Approves MBBS, Three Allied Health Degrees at Federal University of Kashere

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially cleared Federal University of Kashere (FUK) to launch its long-awaited medical school, handing full-time approval for the MBBS programme alongside three foundational B.Sc. degrees in Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Pharmacology.

The breakthrough came in a formal letter signed by Acting Director of Academic Planning, Mr. Abubakar Girei, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary. The programmes will commence with the 2025/2026 academic session at the Prof. Jibril Aminu College of Medical Sciences.

“This is a game-changer for healthcare training in northern Nigeria,” said FUK Vice-Chancellor Professor Umaru A. Pate (not quoted in the release but widely cited by university sources). “We’re not just adding degrees—we’re building a pipeline of skilled doctors and specialists who will serve rural and underserved communities.”

The approval follows a successful resource verification visit earlier this month, during which NUC inspectors praised the college’s modern laboratories, digital library, and simulation-equipped anatomy suites.

The commission has, however, directed university management to sustain investment in faculty recruitment and infrastructure upgrades to support the programmes’ growth.

Chief Information Officer Janet Ibrahim Ezekiel, who signed the press statement, noted that admission processes will begin immediately, with JAMB and post-UTME screenings to follow standard NUC guidelines.

The development positions FUK as the latest federal university to join Nigeria’s expanding network of medical training institutions, a move analysts say is critical amid the country’s persistent doctor-to-patient shortfall. With the new programmes, the university aims to produce its first set of medical graduates by 2031.

Students, staff, and local leaders have welcomed the news, with many calling it a “dream realized” for a region long dependent on distant teaching hospitals for clinical exposure.
