In a dramatic turn of events, Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The announcement came earlier today via a warm welcome post by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, accompanied by a striking image of the governor raising both hands in a gesture of triumph during his membership registration ceremony in Jos.

Mutfwang, who secured the governorship under the PDP banner in 2023, tendered his resignation from the opposition party in a letter dated December 29, 2025, citing a need for “purposeful leadership” and improved service delivery amid Plateau’s persistent ethno-religious tensions.

His formal induction into the APC, marked by the presentation of a membership card at a stakeholders’ meeting, was attended by key party figures including Senator Simon Lalong and Rufus Bature, signaling strong support from the ruling party’s leadership.

The defection, which consolidates APC’s control over all North-Central states including Plateau, Benue, and Kogi, has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media.

Despite the criticism, Mutfwang addressed skeptics during the ceremony, urging unity and promising an inclusive governance approach. “The journey we are embarking on is a journey of faith,” he declared, vowing that “Plateau will reap the dividends of this union.”

Political analysts suggest the defection aligns with a broader trend of gubernatorial shifts to the APC, fueled by internal PDP crises and the allure of federal resources under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Mutfwang’s adviser, Istifanus Nwansat, had earlier hinted at the move, describing it as the “least risky option” given the PDP’s instability.
